Paths In Recovery

PathPeople who have never had to struggle with addiction themselves or with a loved one often find it odd when those of us who have - say that we feel “fortunate” to walk the path of recovery.

“How”, they ask incredulously, “could ANYONE say they are glad or privileged to be an alcoholic or addict?”

Yet the reality of recovery for us where we release all hope for a better past and accept that the future is not the result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created one moment or one day at a time in concert with our higher power.

And the music that flows from that concert is a future that is not some place we are going, but that we are forever creating, a future where paths are not to be found but shaped, sometimes breath to breath.

And as we make our way down these new and ever changing paths of recovery the very nature of this continuing process constantly alters, enriches and renews both us and the destination.

That is why today I am a very grateful person in long term recovery from addiction.
